The Empty House
Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe
TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
This digital composite series is based upon the work of Virginia Woolf, specifically her novel To the Lighthouse. The novel takes place on the Isle of Skye in Scotland at the very end of the Victorian Era. Society was just coming into a modern age and Victorian values were still firmly rooted. Woolf’s novel examines and deconstructs the way these people behaved within their patriarchal code, revealing the extreme family dysfunction and psychological issues that resulted from this rigid structure. The Ramsay family and their guests are the characters that inhabit this novel and they are absolutely falling apart. In the book, however, all of this is buried skillfully by Woolf and her wonderful ability to hint at dark undercurrents without ever really revealing them.
n my take on To the Lighthouse, I am choosing to bring to light the eerie destruction of this family. The photographs I have crafted embrace the fantasies and inner thoughts of the characters. They are beautiful, but are also intended to unsettle the viewer. Though the images have semi-realistic qualities, they are meant to be dreamlike in execution, again bringing to mind the inner thoughts and struggles of the people they represent. This surreal aesthetic allows me to fully illustrate all of the stunning imagery Woolf creates in her novel through the use of a combination of appropriated and original imagery.
It is my hope that in creating this series, more people will become interested in rediscovering her work.
